RWE expands partnership with GE Vernova to secure U.S.- made components for two energy projects

RWE expands partnership with GE Vernova to secure U.S.- made components for two energy projects:

  • RWE selects American manufacturer GE Vernova to supply more than 100 domestically produced wind turbines for 308 MW of energy projects in West Texas
  • Affirms commitment to advancing America’s manufacturing renaissance and energy dominance through partnerships with leading U.S. companies
  • RWE investment will deliver more domestic energy to support demand growth and fuel new economic activity and job creation

AUSTIN, Texas, March 18, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — RWE, the third largest renewable energy company in the U.S., is advancing its commitment to investing in American energy dominance and rural economic development with projects to upgrade and expand homegrown energy capacity near Big Spring, Texas. The projects signal a strategic investment in expanding domestic power generation to meet demand from the state’s booming manufacturing and technology sectors.

Through the repowering of its 127 MW Forest Creek wind farm currently underway and construction of its 181 MW Honey Mesquite project, which will begin in Fall 2025, RWE will deliver 308 MW of new and upgraded homegrown power capacity to West Texas. Both projects will use GE Vernova’s domestically produced wind turbine technology, underscoring RWE’s commitment to advancing America’s manufacturing renaissance. GE Vernova is leveraging its robust domestic supply chain and manufacturing capabilities to deliver 109 of its state-of-the-art 2.82 megawatt (MW) wind turbines for both projects.

Kevin Kroll, Chief Operating Officer, RWE Clean Energy: “RWE’s investments in West Texas symbolize our steadfast commitment to producing homegrown energy and strengthening U.S. manufacturing and supply chains through our partnerships with great American companies like GE Vernova. Together, we are contributing to American energy dominance and we are fostering continued economic opportunity and job creation in rural communities across the country.”

Scott Stalica, Executive Director of North American Commercial Operations, GE Vernova: “We are pleased to have an opportunity to support a leader in the wind industry and appreciate RWE’s confidence in our business, our technology, and our people. These projects are another example of how wind power can support the country’s growing energy needs, while creating U.S. jobs and bolstering energy security.”

Onsite construction is now underway at Forest Creek to modernize the facility and extend its operating lifetime for an additional 30 years. The project includes the decommissioning of all original wind towers, turbines and other components and construction of new tower foundations for the 45 new GE Vernova turbines that will be installed onsite. Forest Creek is expected to resume operations by the end of 2025. As part of its commitment to minimizing waste and reusing or recovering materials at its projects, RWE is partnering with Wanzek Construction, Inc., a MasTec Renewables company, to ensure that all decommissioned components including the wind turbine blades, rotors and nacelles will be repurposed or recycled.

RWE’s Honey Mesquite wind farm will begin construction later this year and is expected to begin operating in late 2026. Together, the two projects will create employment opportunities for hundreds of workers during peak construction and bring millions in new economic activity to rural West Texas from RWE’s investment in the region. In total, RWE has invested $9 billion dollars statewide in Texas since 2007 when Forest Creek first began operations.

Powering Communities and Fueling Growth
RWE is proud to partner with the hundreds of communities across the U.S., where its more than 180 operating facilities are located, to ensure long-term economic benefits, employment opportunities and tax revenues to support local schools, law enforcement, fire districts and other essential services. The upgraded Forest Creek wind farm and new Honey Mesquite project together will deliver approximately $60 million in tax revenue to Glasscock and Sterling Counties over their operating lifetimes, significantly expanding the tax base and support for essential services in those communities.
