LOW-CARBON FUELS

OCI and NuStar team up on ammonia in Midwest

  • OCI Global and NuStar Energy sign agreement for ammonia transportation

  • NuStar to install a new 14-mile pipeline segment connecting OCI’s Nitrogen facility in Wever, Iowa with NuStar’s existing 2,000 mile ammonia pipeline

  • OCI’s facility uses ammonia for fertilizer and Diesel Exhaust Fluid production

  • Partnership aims to serve agricultural needs by delivering more ammonia for fertilizer and upgraded products

  • The project is expected to increase utilization of NuStar’s system in 2024

  • OCI commits $30 million in capital expenditures for new ammonia cooling and storage infrastructure

  • OCI plans to bring an additional 1.1 million tons of blue ammonia capacity online in 2025 in the Gulf Coast

SUSTAINABILITY

Enbridge shareholders reject resolution for reporting indirect emissions

  • Enbridge shareholders reject DI Foundation’s resolution for reporting indirect greenhouse gas emissions

  • Resolution aimed at annual reporting of indirect emissions associated with oil and gas handled by Enbridge

  • Enbridge’s board recommended rejection, with 71% of shareholders voting against it

  • Companies face growing pressure to account for emissions beyond those they generate directly

  • Enbridge reports some Scope 3 emissions when they can be confidently measured or estimated

  • Competitor TC Energy also incompletely reports Scope 3 emissions, while Canadian Natural Resources and Cenovus Energy report them

NATURAL GAS

Equitrans may complete Mountain Valley Pipeline by year-end

  • Equitrans expects federal agencies to issue required authorizations for $6.6 billion Mountain Valley natural gas pipeline by early summer

  • Completion of the project anticipated by the end of 2023, but significant risk and uncertainty remain due to litigation

  • Mountain Valley pipeline is key to unlocking more gas supplies from Appalachia, the largest U.S. shale gas basin

  • Equitrans waiting for new authorizations from multiple federal agencies

  • Equitrans owns about 48.1% of Mountain Valley and will operate it, with the pipeline nearly 94% complete

LNG

Mexican President announces $14 billion nat gas pipeline and LNG project

  • Mexico Pacific to invest up to $14 billion in natural gas pipeline and liquefaction plant in Sonora, Mexico

  • Company’s main market for exported liquefied natural gas (LNG) is in Asia

  • Mexico Pacific constructing a 14.1 million tonnes per annum LNG export terminal in Puerto Libertad, Sonora

  • Mexican President Lopez Obrador announced cooperation agreements with Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) for rail projects in Mexico’s south

  • CPKC exploring ways to support administration’s initiatives and sharing experience, best practices, and technology for two train lines under construction

COAL-TO-GAS SWITCHING

India’s latest power policy draft suggests no new coal-fired power plants

  • India plans to stop building new coal-fired power plants, except for those already in the pipeline, by removing a key clause from the final draft of its National Electricity Policy (NEP), according to government sources.

  • The move would make China the only major economy open to fresh requests to add significant new coal-fired capacity.

  • India and China account for about 80% of all active coal projects, as most developing nations wind down capacity to meet climate targets.

  • The policy revision, if approved, would not impact the 28.2 GW of coal-based power in various stages of construction.

  • India’s proposed coal power capacity is the highest after China, but activists have pressed for a halt to new coal-fired plants to reduce the share of the polluting fuel in overall power output.

  • The final draft of the NEP proposes delaying the retirement of old coal-fired plants until energy storage for renewable power becomes financially viable.

NUCLEAR

Westinghouse unveils small modular nuclear reactor

  • Westinghouse unveiled a small modular nuclear reactor named AP300, which can generate virtually emissions-free electricity to replace coal plants or power water desalination and other industries.

  • The reactor will have a planned capacity of 300 Megawatts and will be a smaller version of Westinghouse’s AP1000 reactor, which is currently operating in China and Georgia.

  • The AP300 reactor will not use special fuels or liquid metal coolants, unlike some other next-generation reactors, and will be constructed by 2030 and operational by 2033.

  • The design for only one small modular reactor has been approved by U.S. regulators, planned by NuScale Power Corp, and it still needs permits.

  • Westinghouse hopes to sell reactors to countries in eastern Europe and sub-Saharan Africa, but it is not yet sure whether the technology can be exported to China due to nuclear proliferation concerns.

LOW-CARBON FUELS

Infinium hits critical milestone in eFuels development

  • Infinium manufactures a ton of proprietary CO2 conversion catalyst at its West Sacramento facility

  • Catalyst is a critical component for creating electrofuels (eFuels), which replace carbon-intensive petroleum products

  • Infinium eFuels are made from renewable power-derived green hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide using a proprietary process

  • Company will start delivering eFuels to Amazon in 2023 to help decarbonize its middle-mile trucking fleet

  • Infinium eSAF, eDiesel, and eNaphtha can replace petroleum fuels and be used in existing engines and distribution infrastructure
